When the owners of a beautiful Melbourne mid-century home were looking to renovate their kitchen, they wanted to maintain the integrity of the era while bringing it up to speed with modern lifestyles.
As great enthusiasts of mid-century design, we were excited to work on this project, which turned out to be a dream job.

The property is a classic double-story orange brick veneer with steel ironwork on its concrete balcony that overlooks Port Phillip Bay. The kitchen’s location within the house remained the same, but we decided to reconfigure it to create better storage, work flow and connection to the adjacent dining area.
The extension of an internal window in the wall between the kitchen and dining rooms created a large servery. This feature is classic of mid-century homes but is rarely of modern proportion. Aesthetically, the window also allows the kitchen’s palette of marble and Blackbutt veneer to seamlessly wrap into the dining space.
A defining feature of the design is the custom-made solid timber handles, which were prototyped for this project, and have since become an elegant addition to Cantilever’s handle range.
The K2 Kitchen System provided the flexibility and design sensitivity required to modernise the home of these mid-century devotees. Timeless, sustainable and a perfect fit.
